New South Wales government is to introduce legislation allowing police to use lethal force against terrorists if required.

Riot squad police officers are set to be armed with rapid-fire weapons as part of an increase in security against terrorism.

The state's Cabinet is meeting to discuss the plan which is said to have been in the works since before former police boss Andrew Scipione left office.

recommended to the New South Wales premier and police minister that 100 officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad be given M4 Colt Carbine weapons

Australia's airports would be protected by armed anti-terror police squads under a plan put forward by Victoria's premier Daniel Andrews.

Mr Andrews says he wants to see the Australian Federal Police given more resources to protect Australia's airports 24 hours a day.
