Almost 100 asylum-seekers who arrived in Australia by boat or sought entry to escape the Syrian civil war have been issued adverse security assessments by ASIO or knocked back after being flagged by the Five Eyes intelligence network.

A week after ASIO chief Duncan Lewis denied a connection between the refugee intake and an increased terror risk, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton confirmed that “close to 30 people” seeking entry through the one-off resettlement of 12,000 Syrian refugees had been disqualified on security grounds.

There has been a reprieve for Coptic Christians in Australia who feared they would be deported to danger in Egypt.

Eighty Coptic Christians from 22 families had faced deportation, but Assistant Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has announced he will review all rejected protection claims lodged by Coptic Christians in Australia.

Mr Hawke said new information received in recent days highlighted the violence the Copts were facing in Egypt at the hands of Islamic State terrorists.

Victorian Police say a decision on whether or not to charge Cardinal George Pell over historical child sexual assault allegations is not far off.

Cardinal Pell is Australia's most senior Catholic, and now holds the position of  Vatican's finance chief.

Speaking from Rome, he has again maintained his innocence.
