اLeaked documents reportedly reveal an Australian government plan to coerce refugees at the Manus Island immigration detention centre into accepting resettlement in Papua New Guinea.
Guardian Australia says documents from camp-manager Broadspectrum and security contractor Wilson also detail strategies to persuade asylum seekers to abandon protection claims and return home.
It comes amid news that demolition of the camp could begin this month ahead of an October deadline, and as extra police are deployed to manage the process.
The Guardian says the documents from 2016 ackowledge many of the detainees feel unsafe in the local community, and would face violence and danger if forced out.
Greens Senator Nick McKim, who recently returned from Manus Island, told Sky News the government's conduct is unacceptable.
