A-B-C staff have called on chairman Justine Milne to stand aside while an independent inquiry looks into claims he called for journalist Emma Alberici - to be fired because her reporting was upsetting the government.

Fairfax Media is reporting that an email from Mr Milne has revealed that he instructed former A-B-C managing director Michelle Guthrie to fire the broadcaster's chief economics correspondent in May.

The Greens say he can't be trusted and must stand down.

Employees of the national broadcaster passed the motion at a meeting in Sydney on Wednesday ((Sept 26)).

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek says if the government has interfered in the ABC's workings, it's a "shocking abuse of power".
