The prime minister told the president Australia has a steadfast commitment to South Korea and the pair agreed the recent nuclear test was a grave provocation.

The leaders also agreed the international community needs to effectively implement United Nation sanctions to exert maximum pressure on North Korea.

The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a United States-drafted resolution to impose new sanctions on North Korea over its latest nuclear test.

It's unclear though whether veto-holding China and Russia will support the motion.

A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the United States, Britain, France, Russia or China to pass.
