Turnbull has stopped short of pulling the trigger on gas export

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stopped short of pulling the trigger on gas export controls as the nation's energy regulator warns Australia is facing a shortfall in domestic gas supplies for 2018.

The Australian Energy Market Operator and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission have published twin reports showing a likely shortfall of nearly 110 petajoules (peh-tah-jools) of gas in 2018 and again in 2019.

Mr Turnbull has told the industry, the government reserves the right to impose controls if they believe it necessary.
