The new prime minister says  Australians unhappy with Westpac's decision to raise mortgage rates should consider switching banks.

Westpac announced on Wednesday ((Aug 29)) its variable home loan rates would go up from September 19, due to its wholesale funding costs rising.

Scott Morrison says Westpac must explain to customers why it lifted variable home loan rates by 14 basis points.
