The United States Supreme Court has upheld a travel ban by President Donald Trump targeting several Muslim-majority nations, rejecting arguments it was discriminatory.

The ruling ends a fierce fight over whether the policy amounted to an unlawful "Muslim ban", and follows the blocking of several previous versions of the ban in lower courts.

The current policy, introduced in September last year, prohibits entry to most people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, as well as from North Korea and Venezuela.

President Trump has hailed the ruling as a great victory for the nation.
