SBS Managing Director Mr. Michael Ebeid launched Monday morning the new SBS Arabic24 service.
The new channel began broadcasting from 6am this morning via digital radio, online and the SBS Radio app.
The service was launched at a stakeholder event in the atrium in Sydney this morning with speeches from Cabinet Secretary, Senator the Hon. Arthur Sinodinos, Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs, the Hon. Craig Laundy and and Shadow Minister for Communications, the Hon. Jason Clare. All the formalities were broadcast live.
The participants praised the role played by SBS to inspire social cohesion in Australia. The Arabic speaking communities are among the fastest growing in Australia and they identify with more than 20 different cultures. Many are coming from war-torn countries and face significant challenges while settling in Australia. With the planned increase in migration this year, specific funding has been allocated for 12 months to help us deepen our engagement with the Arabic-speaking community and deliver on our Charter obligations.
