Virtual reality and the disappearing needle fears

In all, 240 children's-hospital patients are participating in a study with Monash University to determine virtual reality's effectiveness as a paediatric treatment aid.

The hope is the technology could be expanded to help children undergoing other painful treatments, like stitches and burns-dressing changes.

 

On this day, the distracting surround-vision entertainment is an underwater adventure featuring colourful and friendly sea life.

 

For nervous parents, it is entertaining, too.

 

Considering one in 10 adults reports delaying or avoiding health care when needles might be involved, Dr Erin Mills says there is even greater scope for the distraction.
