Why is the 3rd of September Australian National Flag Day?

Soon after federation in 1901, the newly formed national government staged an international flag competition calling for designs which would symbolise the new nation of Australia.

The newly created flag was flown for the first time at a special ceremony in Melbourne on 3 September 1901.
