A new information warfare division will be created within the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to run both offensive and defensive cyber warfare operations.
The new unit will pull together existing cyber capabilities from across the Defence Force, and the government will use $400 million set aside in last year's Defence White Paper to hire cyber specialists.
The government's cyber security minister Dan Tehan says the new unit will help the A-D-F keep pace with modern security threats.
The launch of the new division comes in the wake of another global ransomware attack that affected computer systems around the world this week.
Around 100 personnel will be tasked to run the unit that would defend Australian military targets and prepare assaults on foreign forces.
Labor leader Bill Shorten says he supports the cyber-security push, warning 'soft targets' need protection too.
