Australian Greens leader Richard Di Natale (DEE nuh-TAH-lee) says he's confident Australians will one day choose to celebrate Australia Day on a date other than January 26th. The national Greens party is backing Greens councillors across the country who are campaigning to change the day from the date the First Fleet landed in Sydney Cove in 1788, representing the beginning of British colonisation. Indigenous leaders want the date changed and Senator Di Natale says the campaign offers a chance for Australians to consider what the nation values and to choose a day that all can celebrate. The federal government has strongly opposed any suggestion the date should be changed though, with deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce saying it's a date indigenous Australians can celebrate.
