China has defended its aid program with Pacific island nations, saying it respects the will of Pacific island governments and the development needs of their people. The remarks come after International Development Minister Concetta Fierravanti-Wells said China's assistance had resulted in "useless buildings" and "roads to nowhere". China has lodged an official complaint with Australia over the matter. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang says the comments from Minister Fierravanti-Wells are irresponsible and "full of ignorance and prejudice".
