The preliminary data show results were stable between 2017-18, with students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 presenting no statistically significant changes overall.
But the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [[ACARA]] says the results do show some signifcant improvements in the areas of numeracy, reading, and language conventions across the year levels, compared to the base year of 2008.
Australian students in Years 5 and 9 numeracy, Years 3 and 5 reading, Years 3 and 5 spelling, and Years 3 and 7 grammar were significantly above the 2008 average.
But the writing tests results in Years 5, 7 and 9 were all well below those observed in the 2011 base year.
ACARA chief executive Robert Randall says this is a point of concern.
