The four men arrested for their alleged role in a terrorist conspiracy to bring down a plane in Australia can be detained for up to a week while investigators comb through evidence, a magistrate has ruled.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) say the men, arrested by the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team, are in custody pending ongoing inquiries. The men were arrested yesterday (Saturday) afternoon as New South Wales and A-F-P officers swooped on five properties in the Sydney suburbs of Surry Hills, Lakemba, Wiley Park and Punchbowl. A number of "items of interest" were seized and searches at four of the properties, with A-F-P Commissioner Andrew Colvin suggesting they may take "many more days". Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has praised the efforts of the Australian security services in preventing the potential terror attack.
