Two young Syrian refugees, who are re-building their lives in Australia, have been honoured with a prestigious scouting award The brothers fled the bloodshed in Homs after their scout group was destroyed and many of their friends were murdered.


Victoria's Governor Linda Dessau presented Omar and Saad Alkassab with scouting's global peace award at the annual Queen's scout presentation at Government House in Melbourne.

Both siblings had been part of the scouting movement in Homs when conflict broke out.

Omar was shot and tortured and many of their friends and scouting leaders were murdered before the brothers and their family fled as refugees.

They've been hounoured with the Messengers of Peace Award, an honour bestowed by Saudi Arabia's King Salman for Scouts whose work builds a better world.
