Australia's efforts in research and design of new Polymer notes began in the 1980s through cooperation between the Central Bank, the University of Melbourne and the Commonwealth Science and Industry Research Organization (CSIRO). The project's developers were keen to develop new security features to prevent fraud, including technological fingerprints on the currency
The first fruits of this cooperation were the $ 10 paper issued for the bicentennial in 1988
Efforts continued until Australia became the first country in the world to convert all its paper currency into Polymer bank notes in 1996
