Cooking up a storm: Assyrian recipes' Facebook site founder Katrin Shahbaz causes a stir

Cuisine and traditional cooking is one important way to learn about different cultures. "Assyrian Cooking" is an Assyrian page on Facebook which shares a love of delicious Assyrian food by showing pictures and recipes of everyday, homemade food. Since its founding six months ago, the site has attracted thousands of members, some posting their Assyrian recipes and others learning about the region's cooking.

Founder of Facebook group "Assyrian Cooking", Katrin Shahbaz, is a wife and mother of two and resides in Turlock-California. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Katrin began to explore different cooking websites to pass the time - and that’s when an idea struck her mind, “why don't we have an Assyrian cooking site?” Since then, and during the past 6-7 months, more than 16700 people from around the world have joined the Facebook group to share and learn Assyrian recipes..

Mrs. Shahbaz says she is overwhelmed with the positive feedback from this group.

“This is an opportunity, not only to learn about Assyrian cooking, but [to] also [create] a link among Assyrians all around the globe” Mrs Shahbaz asserts.
