Mr. Kanna began the interview by providing information about Coronavirus in Iraq.

The Assyrian MP stated that the cases have been in decrease recently “which is a good thing”.

“We are doing very well compared to other countries such as Lebanon or Turkey”.

He also stated that “although we have lost many lives, we are happy that we have not had a second wave yet”.

Mr. Kanna also said that the Iraqi Government is in the process of securing the vaccine for its citizens.

Regarding the domestic politics of Iraq, Mr. Kanna stated that “the usual political divisions are still present in the country”.

Mr. Kanna stated that the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, has set the election date on the 6th of June.

Mr. Kanna shared his criticism of this move as he believes that “this move by the Iraqi prime minister was not right as the PM does not have the constitutional authority to call early elections”.

Mr. Kanna also stated that there is a pending bill that needs to be passed by the parliament which “would address several election-related matters such as vote transparency, election fraud, and security”.

“The Federal Court is not complete yet in which it has the final say in the judicial hierarchy regarding constitutional matters and disputes about election results” Mr. Kanna also added.

Mr. Kanna was asked about the amendment bill that he had introduced regarding election laws that would strict incoming votes to Christian political parties including Assyrian ones from only Christian individuals.

Mr. Kanna’s attempt was to prevent other major non-Assyrian political parties from interfering in minority groups.

Mr. Kanna stated that “the amendment was not moved forward by the speaker of the parliament among other amendments introduced by other members”.

The Assyrian MP was asked if he is going for re-election and his response was “my personal will is that I do not run for another term”.

He further added that “if I observe that my absence in the political scene would cause damage to our nation and party, I will stay and keep fighting until the last moment”.

In his final words, Mr. Kanna asked for his people outside of Iraq “to never lose hope and to keep the resistance until the end”.
