On April 12, 1979, the Assyrian Democratic Movement was founded on the idea of both struggle for country and for nationalism together. These two dimensions are strategically linked to the movement's work during the past 41 years. Among its most important works are teaching in the Syriac language and building institutions such as women's and student unions and cultural centres.

Mr. Hermis Tiro, a member of (ADM) and a national thinker said that the movement was distinguished by its unitary view of history, and considered it useful by studying positive examples from it. He also affirmed that (ADM) believed that culture belongs to all parts of the nation without discrimination, and that national security must be in the hands of its people and not in the hands of other nations that create weakness in us.

As for the rights aspect, ADM 's view is pragmatic because the demand for rights related to the general internal and external conditions, so it demands what is possible in its stage and then build on it in the following steps.

Mr. Tiro said that the movement was founded from an urgent national need and gave martyrs in its early stages of struggle and was the first to participate in the government of the northern region of Iraq and then the central government in Iraq.

Mr. Tiro explained that ADM achieved important tasks, namely teaching the language and making the Assyrian New Year and the Assyrian Martyr Day two official days. In Baghdad, ADM  worked to participate in the development of the new Iraqi constitution, to mention for the first time the name of Christians, the Syriac language, the name of the nation, and articles on the exercise of cultural and other rights.
