COVID-19 update: New daily case record for NSW as the Moderna vaccine gets provisional approval

This is your update on the Coronavirus in Australia for 10 August 2021.


  • Premier says lack of compliance increases case numbers in NSW
  • Victorians are getting vaccinated in high numbers
  • Queensland’s new cases were in quarantine while infectious
  • The Therapeutic Goods Administration has given the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine provisional approval

New South Wales
NSW has recorded 356 new locally acquired cases, with one-third of them in community while infectious. Three older people who were not vaccinated died, bringing the number of COVID-related deaths to 32 during the current outbreak. 

Byron Shire, Richmond Valley, Lismore and Ballina Shire Local Government Areas are now under lockdown until 12.01am Tuesday 17 August.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says lack of compliance with public health orders remains the main reason the virus is spreading and urges everyone to get vaccinated.

Victoria
Victoria has recorded 20 new locally acquired cases linked to known outbreaks, with only five in quarantine while infectious.

Health Minister Martin Foley says there are 333,000 vaccines appointments booked over the next month.

Melbourne residents heading to regional areas could face fines upwards of $5,000 as about 200 police are deployed to main and back roads across the state.

  • The government has secured 25 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, with ten million doses expected to arrive before the end of 2021.
