For over five years, Milan Maksimovic with his wife Hilda and son Christian, every Christmas they work tirelessly to pack gifts and hampers for Assyrian newly arrived refugees. This year Milan received the medal Citizen of the Year for Fairfield as recognition for his humanitarian work.


Milan was awarded the citizen of the year medal for the Fairfield area during the Australia day celebration.  He was previously nominated three times for this award, finally, this year he was one of the finalists.

Milan is a former refugee from Serbia, His wife Hilda is an Assyrian former refugee from Iraq, their son Christian is born in Australia.

Three People born in different parts of the world but united as a family that have one thing in common, Helping others.

Every year and before Christmas season, Milan and family endure the summer heat working in their garage packing hampers and presents to deliver them to newly arrived refugees, mostly Assyrians, who have experienced trauma and hardship to flee their countries like Iraq and Syria and arrive in Australia.

Milan and family do their hard work so, at the time of Christmas, they believe they can bring a smile and the feeling of safety and peace to refugees children.

Milan says "it makes us (his family) so happy and proud when we deliver the hampers to these families".

Many of these families became so acquainted with Milan, Hilda, and Christian, they consider them part of their family.

Last Christmas, and because of COVID-19 safety measures, They didn't deliver hampers but instead, they delivered toys to the children.

Milan says that through MILANHILDACARE, they will continue delivering the smile and happiness to the children.
