The ongoing increase of Covid-19 cases in Victoria is causing the government to introduce new restrictions. Joseph Haweil, councillor at Hume city council and resident of Victoria outlined to us the new restrictions and the effort from the government to stop the crisis.

Mr. Joseph began the interview by briefing the audience about how the current situation escalated in this quick manner. Especially that Victoria had fewer cases compared to other states such as NSW a couple of months ago.

We asked Mr. Joseph if he has any numbers of how many Assyrians have contracted the virus. However, he mentioned that the data collected is based on geography only.

Mr. Joseph said that he as a councillor hasn't been to work physically in a while due to the pandemic. However, similarly to thousands of other workers, the councilors have been functioning via online platforms.

There have been almost 1.7 million tests in Victoria so far, Mr. Joseph said to our program. He also outlined that there several places located in his council area in which local residents can attend for testing even if they have the mildest symptoms.

Mr. Joseph concluded with urging the people of Victoria to follow the instructions of the government and health officials in order to overcome this challenging crisis.
