ROUGH DRAFT #49 THE GARAGE SALE

Monikka currently is working on a project on developing writing skills for theatre. Her project involves the rehearsal of Assyrian actors reading the script of theatre production.

The discussion and analysis of the script are further developed for the actual stage production. The drama is called Garage Sale.

Garage Sale is a comedy about an Assyrian family living a simple life in Western Sydney’s Fairfield until their household appliances start to mysteriously break down around them.

The niece, Dina, believes the family should stop buying cheap appliances from Bigmart but her aunt, Atto Asyet believes the breakdown is a sign from the great beyond.

Through comedy and magic realism, the work explores culture, sustainability and family.

Monikka says her project and the search for Assyrian performers is not only for the purpose of this production, but to establish an Assyrian Australian-based theatre group.

She believes, later, this group will be involved in more professional Australian productions.

She also extends her invitation to Assyrian writers who can collaborate with her to work in other productions.

Garage Sale will be played on Friday 26 March, 6:45 pm, Richard Wherrett Studio of the Roslyn Packer Theatre.

The event can be streamed live via the STC Facebook account on Fri 26 Mar at 6.45pm
