An international study that measures 15-year-olds’ ability in math, reading and science around the world has uncovered data about learning levels bound to cause concern. Across the country, math levels are in steep decline.
The study was carried out by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)
In Bulgaria, mean performance in reading remained stable, around a flat trend line, throughout the country’s participation in PISA (2001-2018).
The drop in mean science performance between PISA 2015 and PISA 2018 is one of the largest observed over this period amongst all PISA-participating countries and economies.
Overall, 47 per cent of Bulgarian students have not reached the minimum level of reading literacy - the results of the international PISA test conducted between 600,000 students from 79 countries around the world show.
47 per cent of the ninth grade Bulgarian students are almost completely illiterate.
