Turnbull and Shorten say they are keen to consider the possibility of bringing in electronic voting

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has formally declared victory in the federal election, eight days after Australians went to the polls.

Earlier, Labour leader Bill Shorten telephoned Mr Turnbull to concede defeat and congratulate him.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has claimed victory in the federal election.

Labour leader Bill Shorten has congratulated Mr Turnbull, saying it is clear the Coalition will form government.

Mr Shorten says he hopes, for the nation's sake, the Government does a good job.

He has pledged to work with the Coalition where possible.

Mr Turnbull says he also hopes to find common ground.

The Prime Minister says there are a number of key issues the Government needs to balance.

However, Bill Shorten says he will stand firm on Labour's core values.

He says Labour has a mandate to stand up for Medicare and make sure schools are properly funded.

Mr Turnbull says the caretaker period is over and he expects his ministry to be sworn in next week.

He says there is no cause for a major shake-up.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten say they are keen to consider the possibility of bringing in electronic voting.

They say they do not want the country to drift for days after an election without knowing the winner.

The Labour leader says he will contact Mr Turnbull to suggest laying the groundwork for new laws allowing electronic voting.
