Deep sea diver Mihail Galabov discovers a historic shipwreck

How SS Lady Young was lost:

SS Lady Young departed from Newcastle on 24th June 1865, with a cargo of coal on route for Melbourne.

The crew were forced to anchor at Twofold Bay when strong winds caused the vessel to leak. After a couple of days the vessel was underway, however, it was caught in another strong gale off Wilsons Promontory and forced to anchor again near Rabbit Island on the 9th June. The crew manned the pumps through the night but with very little affect.

The weather conditions worsened, and the water continued to rise in the hold. The captain decided to jettison most of the cargo to lighten the vessel and on 12th July the crew managed to pump the ship dry. They weighed anchor on 13th July, but the sea was rough, so they stayed in the channel at 9 plus fathoms of water.

At 8.20am on 14th July strong rolling seas drove the vessel heavily onto ground. The foremast went, taking with it the main topmast and mizzen topgallant. The ship was abandoned, and the crew were later picked up by the Goldseeker. Several hours after the abandonment Lady Young was completely torn apart by the waves.
