The Spanish Prime Minister says plans to take control of Catalonia and to halt the region's push for independence, are the only way forward.
Catalonia is facing direct rule from Madrid from Friday, due to an independence bid which the Spanish government says goes against the country's 1978 constitution.
Spanish PM, Mariano Rajoy says he will sack the Catalonia government, and remove its parliamentary powers.
Mr Rajoy also says regional elections will take place once law and order is restored in Catalonia.
The President of Catalonia has surprisingly ruled out holding a snap regional election.
It had been expected that Carles Puigdemont would call such an election to try and break the deadlock between the Spanish central government and those who seek independence from Spain for Catalonia.
But Mr Puigdemont says he hasn't received sufficient guarantees from the Spanish government that holding an election would prevent the imposition of direct rule by Spain on the autonomous area.
