An exhibition held at the Russian Cultural and Information Centre in Sofia on occasion of the Day of Bulgarian Education, Culture and Slavonic Alphabet presented the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius as “reformers of Slavonic script” and “creators of Church Slavonic language”.
The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) is perplexed about the substitution of historical and linguistic facts, known to unprejudiced experts in Slavonic studies.
According to BAS’ statement, “On the brightest Bulgarian holiday, an exhibition of a friendly country like Russia should take into account the indisputable contribution of the Old Bulgarian language to the cultural history of the world as the third sacred language in Europe”.
Interviewed by 24 Chassa, history professor Milko Palangurski claims that Moscow always thinks of something to show its attitude to the Bulgarians on every national holiday.
"They always find a way to provoke Bulgaria on several subjects on which all Bulgarians are united," professor Palangurski remarked.
He views this as an attempt to control Bulgaria's medieval history, which is fundamental to the nation.
While there was no official reaction to the provocation, diplomats commented off the record that scholars have already spelled out things for Moscow.
