Forget Taylor Swift and the Hottest 100 - this is what some people will be singing along to this 'Straya' Day.

A still from the viral YouTube hit "Straya".

Peter Garrett dancing, Bob Hawke drinking and people wondering where to find Canberra are just some of the uniquely Australian experiences highlighted in the viral video hit Straya.

The 2.34 minute hit has been described as an alternative Australian anthem online by fans, who have watched the clip more than 1 million times on YouTube.

Set to the tune of Outkast’s Hey Ya!, the song features iconic Australian footage including Gough Whitlam addressing the public outside Old Parliament House.

Creator Terry Mann also used snippets from film clips by Midnight Oil, AC/DC, Kylie Minogue and The Wiggles.

Mr Mann, who works under the name Coach Bombay, told ABC Radio that the patriotic project was the result of an internet challenge to create an Australia Day anthem.

"The only right time to put out something like this is in the lead up to Australia Day, really," he said.
