Barack Obama has given his farewell address as United States president.

President Obama delivered the speech in his adopted hometown of Chicago, to a packed audience of supporters.

He told the crowd he would ensure the smooth transition of power to President-elect Donal Trump.

" In 10 days, the world will -- the world will witness a hallmark of our democracy. (CROWD BOOS) No, no, no. The peaceful transfer of power from one freely elected president to the next. (APPLAUSE) I committed to President-elect Trump that my administration would ensure the smoothest possible transition, just as President Bush did for me."
