A man is dead and another is fighting for life after a crane lifting a tub of concrete at a Melbourne worksite dropped its load.

It is believed the crane dropped the concrete into a pit at the Box Hill building site on Whitehorse Road, where three men were working about 12.20pm.

Ambulance Victoria senior intensive care paramedic Gary Robertson told reporters at the site one man had died, another was taken to hospital with critical injuries and a third man had minor injuries and was being assessed in hospital.

"This has been a particularly tragic event," he said.
