Cars and food had the most recalls in the 2016 financial year.
There were a total of 670 recalls, up from 596 the previous year, with cars accounting for 182 of them, data from Australia's consumer watchdog shows.
Food and grocery recalls jumped to 123, from 71, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says.
The third biggest offending category was electrical and gas products with 80 recalls. However, that was down from 104 in the previous year.
Recreational goods was the fourth highest category, followed by toys and children's products.
The ACCC has also launched its new Product Safety Australia website which lists product recalls and provides information on product safety standards for consumers and retailers.
