Thousands of Chinese goths are sharing selfies on social media, protesting what they call discrimination over the way they look.

The social media frenzy started after a female university student from Guangzhou said she was stopped by a staff member at a subway station, who asked her to remove her heavy makeup.

The Guangzhou Metro has since apologised to the woman.

But, on Chinese social media site Weibo, many goths are still sharing their experiences - under the hashtag "take a selfie for the Guangzhou Metro".

In China, the goth sub-culture was popularised through Japanese manga, vampire novels, and pop music.
