Citizenship Minister says councils get visa powers to attract migrants to regional areas

Almost 90 per cent of skilled migrants who arrived in Australia in last financial year tend to settle in Melbourne and Sydney.

As Australia's population surpassed 25 million at 11.01pm last night, Citizenship Minister Alan Tudge  announced a “Designated Area Migration Agreement” — a migration and settlement policy which would include visas conditional on settling in cities outside of Sydney and Melbourne.

According to Department of Home Affairs figures, almost 90 per cent of skilled migrants who arrived in Australia in last financial year tend to settle in Melbourne and Sydney.
