Australia's largest superannuation fund is calling on the federal government to take action in response to the economy's contraction in the September quarter.

The government has used the figures to urge Labor and the Greens to back its economic proposals, some of which have stalled in the parliament.

But Industry Super Australia's chief economist Dr Stephen Anthony says the government needs to make clear what its economic strategy will be going forward.

Dr Anthony: "There are no strong growth drivers there and there's no obvious blue-print for growth coming through the federal government at this stage. So, we would encourage the government to do everything it can, form the release of the mid-year (budget) update on December 19th, through the Christmas period and beyond to articulate a comprehensive reform program so that all parties in the parliament can get behind and drive through."
