Refugee advocacy groups will join educators today (Mon) to rally in Sydney in support of the rights of teachers to wear pro-refugee 'Close the Camps' T-Shirts in schools.
The Refugee Action Coalition says despite facing intimidation from federal and state governments, hundreds of teachers in New South Wales and Victoria will hold protests at schools this week.
Spokesman Ian Rintoul has told S-B-S Radio News .. advocates believe refugee support remains crucial.
Rintoul, "I think it has become more and more important as it has become obvious that nothing has fundamentally changed on Nauru and Manus Island - the revalations about the ongoing abuse there - the fact that the U-S deal is not going to mean an outcome for everybody who is on Nauru and on Manus Island. The community sentiment has changed - the teachers are just the latest part of that community that are expressing their opposition to the government's policies."
