Gay people can have straight relationships, Abetz says

NSW Independent MP Alex Greenwich has described Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz's comments about gay relationships as 'harmful'.

Senator Abetz has been accused of saying that homosexual people are capable of becoming heterosexual.

In an interview with Sky News’ Samantha Maiden, the Liberal Senator said he was “bemused” that the media appeared to shy away from reporting that it was possible for gay people to have heterosexual relationships as well.

“I think we all know people that have been in - if we can call it that - a straight relationship, that have gone into a gay relationship and people then doing the opposite and the fact that both occur within society, I think is [an] established fact,” he said.

“Why we can't report on the two-way traffic is something that has bemused me somewhat and is indicative of a certain bias in the media, that they only want one side of the equation spoken about."

But Mr Greenwich has told Sky News Senator Abetz's comments are damaging.

"You know, gay and lesbian people are parts of every community, every workplace, families and neighbourhoods around the country and our friends, families and work colleagues, want us to be treated equally and fairly. And they also really want us to have a respectful and mature national conversation about this reform. They want our parliament to deal with it and resolve the matter."

The comments come after some of the country's biggest businesses threw their support behind same-sex marriage by asking Australians to wear a specially designed acceptance ring until same-sex marriage is legalised.
