Melbourne's Federation Square is not a "heritage asset", according to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, but the site will still be considered for a protection listing.

According to The Age, National Trust of Australia's Victorian branch nominated Federation Square as a registered heritage site that requires protection.

Their nomination was acknowledged by Heritage Victoria, and a temporary protection order was granted, which means no construction will be allowed until 21st Dec.

The controversial Apple store and Metro Train Tunnel project are affected by this order.

If this 16-year-old square is listed as registered heritage site, any construction around Federation Square will be assessed by Heritage Victoria.
