Police say there are signs a Canberra house fire that killed three people was "deliberately lit"
Superintendent Scott Moller said firefighters and police were confronted by a "horrific" scene after being called to the blaze in Bonner, north of Canberra, on Monday.
"We are looking at all kinds of accelerants used. We have a number of different seats of fire. We can certainly see ... the indications are that it's been deliberately lit," he told reporters on Tuesday.
But Supt Moller said investigations were continuing into the cause of the fire and they were exploring all possibilities.
A crime scene has been established after the badly-burned bodies, whose identities have not been confirmed, were discovered inside.
But neighbours have told Nine Network a mother lived at the Bonner property and her two children visited on weekends.
Earlier Supt Moller was unable to confirm the ages or genders of the dead.
"Shortly after a structural assessment was completed, police entered the premises and searched the house," he said.
"During that search, police tragically located three persons that were deceased."
A forensics team will conduct further investigations on Tuesday.
Police are asking for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers online or on 1800 333 000.
