Mr Shorten says the move is vital .. to ensure Australia doesn't again drift for days after an election without knowing who won.
"In a non-partisan spirit I will be writing to Mr Turnbull and saying really we're a grown up democracy. It shouldn't be taking eight days to find out who's won and who's lost. I actually think it's long overdue to look at electronic voting in this country."
Mr Turnbull pointed towards New South Wales' electronic voting system ..while agreeing a change in the way Australians can vote should be looked at.
"I've been an advocate of electronic voting for a long time. And I would commend you to the work of the New South Wales electoral commission that has been more enthusiastic I think than its federal counterpart. Yes this is something we must look at."
