NAPLAN results show 'no significant improvement' despite funding increases

The latest NAPLAN data shows national results have plateaued, with writing skills a major concern. Education experts say teachers and parents need to work together to improve the literacy and numerical capabilities of students across the country.

The latest data on the performance of schools across the country show barely any improvements on previous years, with reading and writing skills stalling.

The 2016 NAPLAN preliminary results show numeracy is up by just 1.26 per cent.

Education Minister Simon Birmingham has told Sky News it's especially disappointing, with more than 23 per cent growth in federal funding into schools over the last three years.

"What they shows is while money is important and investment in schools is important how you use that funding is even more important, which is why the Turnbull government went into the last election outlining a range of particular reforms from early intervention, to pick up problems for kids at the youngest age, through to minimum standards for school leavers and backing our most high performing teachers."
