The NSW government is set to rake in more than $16 billion through the long-term lease of just more than half its stake in the state's poles and wires.

The government on Thursday entered into an agreement with an Australian consortium, including IFM Investors and AustralianSuper, for the partial lease of Ausgrid.

"Our poles-and-wires transactions are unlocking billions of dollars to fund new schools, hospitals, public transport and roads that will make a real difference to peoples' lives," NSW Premier Mike Baird said.
