Optus will have 50 sites live in its 5G home broadband service in the next two months, which it says makes it the first carrier in Australia to commercialise the technology.

Two 5G home broadband sites are now live in Canberra and one in Sydney, with another 47 planned to be up-and-running by March, chief executive Allan Lew has revealed at an event in Canberra.

Mr Lew says the company's early use of 5G will give it a competitive advantage into the future and that the company will deliver 1200 sites by March 2020.
