Police around Australia are finalising security plans ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations.

In Sydney, thousands of extra officers will be deployed on the ground, on the water and in the air, focusing on Sydney Harbour and its multiple foreshore areas.

New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian says the terror threat has become something that needs to be planned for.

In Melbourne, extra bollards will be among the methods used to protect inner city partygoers from potential attacks and several key streets will be closed to vehicles,

2,000 extra police officers will be deployed across the state.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews is reminding people to report any issues to police.
