Police say an explosion at the Australian Christian Lobby's Canberra office wasn't politically, religiously or ideologically motivated.

Windows were blown out and furnishings destroyed at the office in the suburb of Deakin after it was rammed by a van carrying gas bottles last night.

The driver took himself to the Canberra Hospital, suffering serious burns and remains there in a critical condition.

He has been questioned by police.

The director of the Australian Christian Lobby, Lyle Shelton, believes the incident was a deliberate attack on free speech.

But Mark Wallters from A-C-T Police, refutes that.

"As a result of our conversations with the man, we've been able to establish that his actions were not politically, religiously or ideologically motivated. The man is a 35 year old Australian national that resides here in the ACT. ACT police are carrying out thorough investigation to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this incident."
