A man wanted over the stabbing death of a woman in NSW's Lake Macquarie region has been shot dead by police after allegedly threatening officers with a knife.
Investigators were searching for Tafari Walton, 21, after a woman was found with critical stab wounds at a home in Glendale, west of Newcastle, on Wednesday.
The woman, 27, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital but later died.
Officers confronted Walton at a home on Vena St in Glendale just before 9am on Thursday when he allegedly threatened them with a knife.
He was shot by police and died at the scene.
"A critical incident team will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm," NSW Police said in a statement.
It's understood paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the 21-year-old for multiple gunshot wounds but he could not be revived.
Inquiries are continuing.
