The Vietnamese president has died aged 61 after a serious illness, state media reports

Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang has died on Friday at the age of 61 after a serious illness according to state media.

"President Tran Dai died at 10:05 am on the 21st of September at the military hospital," the official Vietnam News Agency reported Friday.

He served as Vietnam's president, one of the most powerful political positions, from April 2016.

He was previously the Minister of Public Security, after joining the Communit Party of Vietnam in 1980.
