The closure of the manufacturing operations, as well as consolidating corporate offices in Melbourne, will cut the Japanese automaking giant's workforce from nearly 4 thousand to around 1,300.
The Camry petrol model will be the last Toyota car to cease production at the plant in suburban Melbourne.
Toyota says its commited to helping workers in the transition period and beyond, and the state government has pledged a 46.5 million dollar support package for them.
Workers have expressed sadness at the closure, but relief that they have a firm date for it, so they can get on with trying to move on with their lives and careers.
This employee says he particularly sympathises with his younger colleagues.
"(I'm) sad for all the young guys and the apprenctices, and all the engineers...the young guys who normally get employed here. It's unfortunate."
